TPC Sawgrass 17th hole final drink count (2008)
The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass has made for interesting golfing for years. The island green is often found only after repeated tries, as was evident last year when 46 players found the water with their tee shot. This year, DangerousGolfer.com will be counting the number of balls that land in the drink on the 17th during The Players’ Championship. Check back each day for the new update that is bound to make you feel better about how many balls you’ve already bought this spring.
Round 1; Thursday, May 8th -
Wow… a quiet day. A total of 19 balls were hit in the water off of the tee on the famed 17th hole on Thursday, compared to 46 during the opening round in 2007. The only player to miss the green twice on Thursday was Matt Kuchar, bringing the total for the day to 20 (compared to 50 a year ago). Certainly these guys will make us feel better before the weekend is over.
Round 2; Friday, May 9th -
Yesterday, Ernie Els declared his disdain for the 17th. He doesn’t have much company this year. Only 18 tee shots found the water today, creating a two day total that is eleven less than last year’s first day total.
Round 3; Saturday, May 10th -
Come on. I hit more balls into the water in one round than these guys are producing in 3 days time. Ten tee shots found their way into the water at the 17th today, meaning 48 balls have found the drink after 54 holes. That’s only two more than day one’s total from 2007. Maybe the pressure of tomorrow’s final round will produce something more interesting at 17 than Sergio 3-putting.
Round 4; Sunday, May 11th -
Finally, some drama at 17. Paul Goydos was in a playoff with Sergio Garcia to decide The Players Championship - a playoff that started on 17. Goydos put his in the water, and Garcia put his within 4 feet. Garcia wins the biggest one of his career, and Goydos can’t feel too bad about himself either. This is easily his best showing ever on tour, and the 17th at Sawgrass isn’t the best place to begin your first ever PGA Tour playoff.
Due to swirling winds, 16 balls were hit into the water today, including Goydos’ playoff plunk. Including all tee shots and shots from the drop area, there were 65 balls sent to the wishing well at this year’s Players’ Championship.
